THANK YOU DAN BROWN AND BAR-B-CUE CREW!

Dan Brown

The Colts Webmaster would like to extend his sincere thanks to redshirt Dan Brown. Dan kept the Colts book this past season - a duty held in 2008 by then-red-shirt-now-Player-of-the-Year DJ Johnston. (Will history repeat itself?) Like DJ, Dan did a masterful job of getting not only all of the stats compiled for each and every blog posting but distributing the scores to the local newspapers - yet still finding time to get his homework done! Great job Dan, and I wish you the best of luck in your 2009-2010 season.

The Colts Bar-B-Cue Crew

The Colts would also like to extend their thanks to all of the families that worked on the Colts Bar-B-Cue this year. The Bar-B-Cue offering at home games was easily the best tasting and most complete of any food service at any JC in Northern California. All of the families involved deserve a blog round of applause. (P.S. Outstanding t-shirts, as well).

A GREAT SEASON - GOOD LUCK IN 2009-2010

It has been this Webmaster's distinct privilege to provide blog information and web site updates for the Canada Colts baseball family. After two seasons it's time to turn the keyboard over to a new Colts Webmaster - hopefully a player's parent or a student at Canada who is passionate about baseball and the green and yellow. Best of luck to all of the sophomores who are moving on to other schools, or to other ventures. And as always, best of luck to the Canada Colts; it was a great year. Go get ‘em in 2009-2010!

TEAM FIRST - COLTS PUT UP IMPRESSIVE NUMBERS

It's a time-honored basball axiom: pitching and defense wins ball games. Never was that axiom more apparent than with the 2009 Canada Colts. The pitching staff's collective 3.50 team ERA ranks them 9th in the State. The Colts led the league in saves (11), runners picked off (12), fewest earned runs allowed (140), fewest wild pitches (4), and fewest balks (3).

And not to be forgotten in all of the final numbers is the fact that the 2009 Colts can flat out pick it. Their .964 fielding percentage was second in the league.

Offensively, the Colts had a .319 team batting average - second only to Ohlone's .328 average. The Colts also banged out 33 home runs, 288 RBI, had a .474 slugging percentage, a .400 on-base percentage, 679 total bases and 106 stolen bases - all second in the league to Northern California's #1 ranked team, Ohlone.

THE FINAL NUMBERS - COLTS OFFENSIVE HIGHLIGHTS

The final overall stats from Spincostats.com have been posted: here's where some of the Colts rank in a variety of offensive categories.

First baseman DJ Johnston was 2nd in the league in batting (.400), 4th in slugging pct. (.671), 5th in on-base percentage (.458), 5th in runs scored (43), 2nd in hits (68), tied for 4th in doubles (14), 2nd in RBI (55), and tied for 4th in home runs (8). Johnston's slugging percentage (23rd), hits (8th) and RBI totals (5th) rank him among the States leaders.

Center fielder Chris Viegas was 12th in the league in batting (.351), tied for 5th in runs scored (40), 7th in hits (59), tied for 7th in home runs (6), and 3rd in the league in stolen bases (29). The latter number ranks Viegas 10th among the States stolen base leaders.

Shortstop Eric Herrera was 2nd in the league in doubles (15), tied for 5th in the league in runs scored (40), 8th in the league in hits (58). Herrera's doubles total rank him 8th among the States leaders.

Second baseman Pierson Jeremiah was 10th in the league in RBI (33), tied for 10th in the league in doubles (11), and tied for 12th in the league in walks (21).

THE ROAD TO THE PLAYOFFS: PROOF THAT EVERY GAME COUNTS

For the second season in a row, Tony Lucca's Canada Colts have earned an out-right State Playoff Berth. With the official announcement of the Northern California State Playoff Seeding, the #13 seeded Colts can take pride in knowing that during 2009 they faired well against many of the 18 teams that will battle it out in NorCal Playoffs.

The seeding also illustrates the importance of every single game on the schedule - especially those against powerful non-conference rivals.

In non-conference play, the 29-12 Canada ball club beat #3 seed Feather River 3-1 in their only meeting at Colt Field: a Feather River team that went on to have a 40-3 overall record, the best record of any JC in Northern or Southern California.

The Colts also beat #4 seed CSM in their only meeting, as well as #11 seed West Valley 3-1 - both at Colt Field. The Colts also beat #17 seed Shasta twice, as well as #15 seed San Jose and #16 seed Chabot College. And if the Colts needed any further proof as to the type of team they had entering league play, they split with Cuesta College in a road doubleheader - a Cuesta team that is now seeded #3 in the Southern California Playoffs.

COLTS TO FACE CSM IN PLAYOFFS

In a historic first, the Canada Colts will open the 2009 California Community College Baseball Playoffs against longtime county rival College of San Mateo. The games will be hosted by Golden Gate Conference Champion CSM (30-11 overall, 18-7 in league). The first game of the best of three series takes place Friday, May 8th at 2:00 p.m. Canada finished third in the Coast Pacific Conference with a 17-8 league record, and an overall mark 29-12 - beating CSM 6-3 in their only meeting of the season back on March 15th.
